Waxing Aftercare: What's Normal, and Avoiding Ingrown Hairs
Most disappointment with waxing doesn't happen in the salon. It happens three days later, when little bumps appear and you're not sure whether something went wrong. Usually nothing did — but a few habits make the difference between skin that stays smooth for weeks and skin that gets itchy and spotty.
The first 24 hours
Waxing leaves the follicles open for about a day, which is why this window matters more than anything else. Avoid:
- Sun and seawater — the two most tempting things in Da Nang, and the two worth waiting on.
- Swimming pools — chlorine on freshly waxed skin stings and irritates.
- Hot showers, baths and saunas — lukewarm is kinder for the first day.
- Sweaty exercise — sweat plus open follicles is how spots start.
- Tight synthetic clothing — friction is the enemy; loose cotton is ideal.
- Perfumed lotion, self-tan and deodorant on the waxed area for the first day.
What's normal, and what isn't
Normal: mild redness, small raised bumps, and skin that feels a bit tender. On most areas this settles within a few hours; on sensitive areas it can take a day. A cool shower and plain aloe or an unscented moisturiser help.
Not normal: redness still spreading the next day, skin that feels hot and swollen, blistering, or anything weeping.
That's worth showing to a pharmacist or doctor rather than waiting it out — pharmacies in Da Nang are easy to find and used to helping visitors.
Ingrown hairs: why they happen
An ingrown hair is simply new growth that can't break through the surface, so it curls back under the skin and the area reacts. Waxing itself doesn't cause them — dead skin sitting over the follicle does. That's why the fix is exfoliation, not avoiding waxing.
The routine that prevents them
- Wait about three days, then start exfoliating gently — a washcloth, an exfoliating mitt or a mild scrub. Two or three times a week is plenty.
- Moisturise daily. Soft skin is easier for new hair to push through. Unscented is best.
- Loose cotton for the first couple of days, especially after bikini waxing.
- Don't pick or dig at a bump. That's how a small ingrown becomes a scar or an infection. Exfoliate around it and let it surface.
- Don't shave in between. More on that below.
Between appointments
Most people settle into a four to six week cycle. Waxing on a regular rhythm means the hair is caught at a similar stage each time, and most guests find each appointment easier than the one before.
The one thing that undoes it is shaving in between. It resets the growth cycle, so you wait another two to three weeks to reach the 5 mm the wax needs — and the blunt regrowth a razor leaves is exactly the kind most likely to become ingrown.
A note for Da Nang specifically
Heat, humidity, sunscreen and sand all work against freshly waxed skin. If your trip is mostly beach days, book your waxing for a day you're not planning to swim — ideally early in the trip, so any sensitivity is long gone before you're in the water. Rinse sand off promptly, and keep the area dry and loose-covered when you can.
